VATS combat, which I appreciated on the 360, doesn’t begin to compare in effectiveness.įWE makes repair much, much easier in vanilla. This made the otherwise brutal Talon Company ambushes easy, since I could usually kill all 3 enemies at close range before any of them could react. I found I could use aimed fire with automatic weapons, putting 2-3 shots into the head of each target and then moving on to the next. The addition of true Bullet Time is a major, major change, particularly if you build a very high agility character to take the two related perks (Swift Reflexes and Superhuman Reflexes) and maximize AP for Bullet Time. This is fine by me since Fallout is about shooting things for me - the one time I tried going the Ninja route on the 360, I found I just didn’t enjoy it. It’s much easier to kill a Deathclaw before it can reach you, for example. The changes to damage favor ranged, stealthy characters, and put melee hostiles at a serious disadvantage.

That can be very frustrating, but you can usually avoid that with range and stealth, even when you have low Sneak skill. Conversely, if you’re surprised, you can die while you’re still trying to figure out where the enemy is. This gives a distinct advantage to whoever fires first, since often you can kill opponents while they’re still turning around or drawing weapons, even with the difficult set to maximum. It took some adjustment since FWE increases damage for most weapons and doubles damage across the board on top of that.

While I had a little new content in the form of Mothership Zeta, I decided to give a couple of mods (Fallout Wanderer’s Edition, Weapon Mod Kits, some UI improvements) a fling to try and bring some fresh life to the experience.įWE has something of a reputation for making the game harder, but aside from greatly increasing the XP requirements for advancement, I found that on the whole it made the game easier. I eventually picked up the PC Game of the Year version on Steam for a few bucks, and recently I decided to revisit it. I played through Fallout 3 and 3 of the 4 DLC (Anchorage, The Pitt, Point Lookout) on the XBox 360 way back when.
